All County Jazz Auditions

All county jazz auditions will be held at Spruce Creek High School. We are very excited to welcome you to our campus for auditions. You will find your audition requirements, and materials on this page.

  • Your director will need to sign you up for an audition by February 9th, 2026.

  • Your directors have this information to do so.


The Day of Auditions:

  • Students should park in the student parking lot.

  • Check in will be at the Freshmen Atrium.

  • All students must sign in by 6:30pm or they will not be allowed to audition.

  • There will be no schedule. Students will audition as they show up.

  • Warmup will be located in the Cafeteria.

  • Students should warm up for a maximum of 15 minutes and then wait in line at their audition rooms.

  • Wind Auditions will be in the Red Hallway.

  • Drum Set will be in the band room.

  • All other rhythm section auditions will be in the chorus room.

April 9th 6-9pm Deltona HS

April 15th 6-9pm @Lakeside Center and Rec Center (Port Orange) (Backup is Spruce Creek)

April 16th- 9am-4pm Practice at Lakeside Center and Rec Center in Port Orange. (Backup is Spruce Creek)

Performances:

April 17th Performance at Lakeside

6:00pm Middle School Jazz

6:30-7:10pm High School Jazz

Audition Requirements & Materials

High School Auditions

Audition Materials

Wind Players

  • Prepared Etude intro and Chorus 1 of the etude! 

  • Sight Reading 

    • (Lead Trumpet will be based off the lead sight reading)

  • Optional Improvisation, second chorus of prepared etude (Four).  Improv begins directly after the first chorus. 

Drums

The indicated number of measures in the different styles listed below to demonstrate steady time keeping and stylistic creativity. They should imagine themselves in a jazz combo situation backing a horn soloist.

  • Jazz Samba (32 bars) quarter note = 100 (No music)

  • Prepared Etude (play along track)

  • Rock Etude (Play along track)  (No sheet music, backing track only)

  • Fast Swing Etude (Play along track)

  • Sight reading

Piano, Guitar, Bass Guitar

Bass players must play upright and electric bass is optional but not needed/required.  Bass players are required to play at least two of the following requirements on upright bass. 

  • Prepared etude intro and Chorus 1

  • Swing Comp/walk etude, 2 chorus

  • Improvisation

    1. Second chorus of the prepared etude (Four).  Improvisation is not optional for rhythm section players.

  • Sight Reading

Middle School Auditions

Audition Materials

Wind Players, Piano, Bass, Guitar

  • Prepared Etude (Entire page)

  • Optional Bb Blues Improvisation one time through the 12 bar blues form

    1. (Improv will not hurt your score but may only help you.)

Drums

  • Prepared Etude

  • Rock Etude (Play along track) (No sheet music, backing track only)

  • Jazz Samba ((32 bars) quarter note = 100) (No sheet music or track! Play your best samba feel)

  • Fast Swing ((24 Bars) quarter note= 140) (No sheet music or track! Play your best fast swing feel)
