Shawn McKaig Shawn McKaig has been an active contributing staff member for the "High Steppin' Hawks" colorguard and majorette program since 1993. Introduced originally as the creative designer for the Winterguard program, Shawn's role slowly evolved into a more significant position. Shawn completed his college education at Flagler College, St. Augustine, before joining the band staff full time. Shawn moved to the Daytona Beach area and accepted a job as a 6th grade Geography teacher at Campbell Middle School. At that time, Shawn took over the direction of the Colorguard and Majorette program and successfully continued the long and successful tradition of excellence that Spruce Creek's colorguard program has earned. Shawn joined the faculty of SCHS one short year later and has continued to serve as director of the Colorguard program ever since. Numerous awards and accolades have been earned by the colorguard program during the course of his tenure including numerous championship trophies, first place finishes, regional championships, and various national level recognitions. Shawn served as a board member for Winterguard International for some 4 years while directly representing the interests of over 120 colorguards nationwide. This governing unit is responsible for dictating the rules, directing the judging systems, monitoring quality, and setting standards for hundreds of colorguards nationwide and abroad. In addition to active judging and varying assignments to the local Florida Federation of Colorguard Board of Directors, Shawn has overseen the successful development of programs designed to continue performance opportunities provided through colorguard participation to a variety of age groups in the local area. These accomplished programs have included a college age performance group consisting largely of Spruce Creek alumni, middle and elementary school performance groups, and most recently, the Creekside Cougarettes Drill Team. Shawn's unique qualities and appreciation of the "Pride, Class, and Dignity" long associated with the High Steppin' Hawks will continue to guide the colorguard and majorette program of SCHS well into the future. Shawn credits the unique atmosphere offered at the Creek, the various talents of the many young women that have participated, the expectation of Creek teachers and administration, the support of the local community, and the outstanding commitment of the Band Booster's Association with the rich tradition that continues through the SCHS program. |
