Luminary Fundraiser
The Spruce Creek High Musical and Performing Arts Program has average annual budget
of about $100,000; a few hundred dollars is given to the program by the school system, leaving
the remaining balance to be raised by the program itself. Several fundraisers are conducted
throughout the school year. Between the Football Ad Program and the Luminary Program (our two
major fundraisers), the band generally raises about half of its budget. The remainder comes from
band fees other fundraising efforts.
A luminary kit contains ten candles, ten holders, instructions, and a bag of sand to keep the
candles from blowing away. Subdivisions, churches, other groups, and the many families which
purchase these luminary kids light them on Christmas Eve throughout the cities of Port Orange,
Ponce Inlet, Daytona Beach Shores and the surrounding area - the areas which the majority of
Spruce Creek students reside in.
On the first two Saturdays in December of every year, the entire musical performing arts program is
divided into groups of four, each with an adult driver. The drivers are given pre-mapped areas, and
the students, in groups of two, sell the kits door-to-door in their band uniforms. This is a mandatory
function for the students. Prior to Thanksgiving, the students assemble approximately 3,500 or more
kits for the sale. Donations are received by supportive community members as well. If the driver
and students sell what they have taken in the morning, they return to the school for additional kits
and map-areas. Sometimes, people that know a particular student wish to pre-order kits, and those are
delivered on the second Saturday. There are prizes given to top sellers by car.
The Luminary Sale is a well-known event, with many residents looking forward to seeing
their favorite Hawks each year come by to help spread holiday cheer.
Let’s make this year the best sale ever!
