General Meeting February 5, 2008

Call to Order: 7:05 p.m.

Passed unanimously.


Parents please note the correction to the Student Orientation white sheet on the table. The event is “Tuesday”, June 3, 2008 and not –Monday– from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.


Treasurer Report – $46,321.00 is balance, however $13,000.00 belongs in student accounts. $22,888.00 proceeds of luminary. Expenses were $3,700.00. Thank you to Jan Albert for the fabulous job. Amended budget to realign for next year. No other details, limited transactions last month. Letter from the directors mailed to parents and if student had balance, statements were attached. Suntrust will make another check run at end of March. The “My Cause” program has been extended through May 15, 2008.


Silent Auction – In Tecla’s absence, Cheri Grigg reported about the Silent Auction Community Fair to be held at the high school March 15th. No cost to rent the facility. Students still required to bring in two items/baskets of at least $20.00 value each. There will be group baskets and those students will be expected to secure donations, gift cards, etc. Cheri demonstrated acceptable items for auction. Paperwork is in the process of being printed and will be passed out soon. Many volunteers are needed for this event. Clipboard was circulated.


Adult Staffing - Enough chaperones for upcoming FBA trips. Few chaperones are needed for February 23rd all-day trip to UCF Jazz Festival.


Colorguard – Mr. McKaig stated that the group was doing well. Both teams have had 14 in them and both have gone up to 15. Thank you to Cheri Grigg for the contact at the Alliance Church on Beville Road where practices have been held. Remarkable difference having a facility to practice in. AA team will perform on Friday evening and the A team on Saturday at Colonial High School. Both teams are doing well.


Webmaster - Anthony Malena indicated that the website had been updated with the Senior Last Will & Testament information needed for the end of the year banquet. Seniors need to prepare the testaments do not procrastinate. Deadline will be enforced. Call him with any questions.


Orchestra Report - Mr. Seth reported that the Orchestra would perform in the afternoon. No report times yet. Rehearse at 10 a.m. and then will drive over. Next Thursday, February 14th, practice after school from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.




Grants and Business Partners – Lynn Kaiser-Conrad reported that Suntrust has extended their “My Cause” program until May. There was still time for parents to open an account and have Suntrust donate $100.00 into the child’s band account. $5,000.00 was received to date from the “My Cause” program. SCHS Band Parents Association was the third highest charity using that program in the state. Two accounts per household. One personal and one business. Lynn applied for two grants and hasn’t heard from either. Dollar for dollar matching on pancake breakfast ($1,000.00 threshold) from Walmart in Port Orange.

Pancake Breakfast - March 8th at Aunt Catfish with proceeds to go to the general fund of the organization to cover costs and shortages. Flyers will be placed at hotels, since this is the second week of bike week. Extra help will be needed at Aunt Catfishs, morning only. Pre-sale tickets will be available soon.


Banquet - Details and discussion at next meeting. Venue changed from Daytona 500 Club to Daytona Beach Resort and Conference Center. Details at next meeting.


Lakeside Jazz - Lots of help needed, especially concession help to oversee the students. John Hoag and Jerry MacKenzie will be in charge. Lori Collins to help with parent volunteers. Sign up sheets to help were circulated. Trophy sponsors needed for different sections, i.e., trumpet, trombone, etc, if you wish to donate or sponsor a section, please contact Mary Hoag. Students working jazz festival are eligible for scholarships, including 8th grade middle school students that may be interested. Next Lakeside Jazz meeting is Thursday, February 21, 2008 at 7 p.m.


Website - Anthony Malena has updated the website with archive photos, history. Working on redesign for current site and new design for alumni. Parents and students that have photos, DVD footage of the year and wish to share it can get it to Mr. Malena for the year in review DVD that he is working on.


Nominating Committee Martha Fabian is working on the committee and all current board members should let Martha know of their intentions for next year.


Directors’ Report - Mr. Seth reported that Mr. Kidd and jazz groups were at UNF Jazz Festival and would be returning later in the evening. Thursday, February 7th after 7th period, busses would be leaving for Haggerty High School for the FBA District Jazz Band Festival. Friday, February 8th and Saturday,

February 9th, at least one bus will be going over and coming back for FBA District Solo & Ensemble. Parents, please see that your student signs up on the board if they are riding the bus. That will determine whether we order one or two busses.


Stetson University will be performing a Sousa Concert at the News-Journal Center on Sunday, February 10th at 3 p.m. - very fun performance, military marches, etc.


FBA District Concert Festival will be held March 6-7-8, 2008. Lake Mary High School on Thursday, Symphony on Friday.


Dr. Musgrave and the “Showcase” will be held at the school on Tuesday, February 26th. A time to show-off the performing arts to the community. Small groups will be performing, dance, drama, chorus and strings - 6:30 p.m.


Eighth grade-incoming freshman orientation to be held on Thursday, February 7th. Few parents needed to answer questions. Starts at 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Looping video of year in review will be shown.


Mr. Seth shared that Mr. Kidd has been asked about upcoming trips. Currently working on an application for Macy’s in 2009 and considering application for Presidential Inauguration Parade, January 2009. Anyone with political connections should contact us, as only one band from each state is selected, very difficult to get selected. Send in any articles, old photos, write name on back.


Mr. McKaig shared that he would like to see more in attendance at these general meetings. Discussion of initiating a telephone call alerting parents of band meeting using the school equipment, isolating only those names and numbers.


Lynn Kindy brought back from All-State some brochures for summer music camps, jot down information if interested.
