Spruce Creek High School Band Boosters Association General Meeting

April 8, 2004

Meeting called to order by Stan Schmidt at 7PM. 

 

Pledge of Allegiance

 

Article of Amendment to the Articles of Incorporation for the Spruce Creek High School Band Parents Association, Inc. were read through and are now ready to be adopted at next months meeting. This was the first reading of the Articles of Incorporation and the official vote will be May 4th.  The Articles will also be posted on the web site.

Margaret Roberts, attorney for the City of Port Orange, reviewed these by laws.  This amendment would change the name of the corporation and define the officers and their duties.

 

Band Captain Report: Roberta Schmidt.

·         Busy month and looking forward to Spring Break.

·         In the FBA contest the Wind Ensemble received straight superior ratings at FBA and the Symphonic Band 1 superior and the rest excellents.

·         Roberta thanked all for their support of the Silent Auction and for the amount and quality of the items.

·         Lakeside Jazz Fest was successful

·         In the State contest both Jazz Bands received straight superiors and the solos received many superior and excellent ratings.  

·         Band Banquet will be May 1st.  RSVP forms were handed out and need to be returned by Wed, April 21st.

·         OCS _ Officer Candidate School  meetings will begin April 20. Next years officers will be announced at the Prism Concert. The Prism concert is May 7th at 7PM in the auditorium

·         The colorguard has completed numerous competitions.

·         Orchestra State is April 22 at Polk College.  Parents invited to come and show their support.

·         Parents were thanked for all of their help this year.

Secretary’s Report – Elaine Kinion

Motion to approve: Jerry Lapidus.  Seconded by: Rick Spitz.   Motion approved.

 

Treasurer's Report - Terri Karol & Ken Lipowitz (not present)

Please see handouts. London fundraising monies are being put into students' individual student accounts.  $9,175 has been collected from the Silent Auction.  Motion made by to approve treasure report by Rick Spitz.  Seconded by Susan Mackenzie. Motion approved.

 

Director’s Report: Andy Kidd

·         Band had an excellent month

·         The Jazz Band received straight superiors and was only the 2nd jazz band in the state to make it to state.  There were 24 Solo & Ensembles that went to state with 17 receiving superiors and 7 receiving excellents.

·         The Prism concert will be Friday, May 7th at 7PM in the auditorium.  There will be two rehearsals, one on Wednesday and the other on Thursday before the concert. From 3-5:30. Encourage the upcoming 9th grade parents and students to attend.

·         Orchestra State will be April 22nd at Polk College.  There is a string clinic every Tuesday.  

·         Middle School Orientation was last Tuesday night.  65 slips were filled out for next year's band. 

·         Summer practices will be every Tuesday from 6-9PM June 1 thru July until the London trip.  A detailed practice schedule will be handed out. Drum camp will be every Tuesday night from 6-9PM.  If you are going to be out of town please send a note to the band directors and let them know.

·         The Sunday before the London Trip (July 18) the band may do an afternoon concert.  Medical release forms, football ad info will also be handed out.

·         Band Camp begins August 2. 

·         The Lakeside Jazz Fest will meet this Thursday night for underclassmen scholarships.  Their web site is www.lakesidejazz.org.  Students must write an essay and fill out the forms.  There will be leadership camps at Eckerd College in St Petersburg.

Mr. John Seth said he was extremely proud of both bands and the way they preformed and for all the hard work they did.  They are busy getting ready for the Prism concert.  He encouraged the students to practice over Spring Break.

 

Guard Report: Shawn McKaig

The season ended last Sunday.  The Championships were held at Lake Brantley and the Spruce Creek Guard placed 6th in their class out of 23.  They placed 9th overall for all guards including two universities.  The Guard received numerous compliments.  This was the last trip of the year.  Auditions are coming up for next year.  Officer Candidates had their first meeting today. 

 

Adult Staffing: Keith Kopshina & Teresa Lubas (not present)       

There are 5400 Volunteer hours to date and will continue to keep tally thru July.  VIP certificates were handed out to VIP with 5, 10, 15 and 20 years of volunteer service.  All were thanked for their help thru all the years. Among many awards recognized, Becky Sitta received a 20-year award and Stan Schmidt was nominated for VIP of the year.

 

Uniform Report: Kathy Shapiro (not present) & Mary Mathis (not present)

Official polo shirts will be for sale for $20 each after the meeting.  Please see Donna Papa.  All chaperones for the London trip will need these shirts.

Ways and Means

Silent Auction: Debbie Corbin & Jenna Steen

Debbie thanked all committee members, everyone who helped to set up and all who worked at the Silent Auction. The auction went very well.  All who donated items were also thanked.  The items that were not sold will be sold at the London Extreme Garage Sale.  The first $8000 raised will go into the general band budget and the remaining amount will go into shares for student accounts. All donations were appreciated. 

Coca-Cola Sale: Joe Papa

 The Coca-Cola fundraiser will begin the Wednesday after Spring Break.  Forms will be handed out.  A case will sell for $12 (24/16 oz bottles) and $4 of each case will go into individual student accounts.  The orders will be placed on Wednesday, April 28 and delivery will be Friday, April 30 at the bandroom.  Coke, Diet Coke, Sprite, Dansani Water and Minute Maid Lemonade will be sold.

London Extreme Garage Sale: Mr. Kidd

Garage sale will be April 24, 2004 from 8AM-noon in the Spruce Creek parking lot.  OCS candidates will help to set up.  Bring your own tables, chairs, change and bags.  Whatever you sell – you keep the money.  This will be publicized. 

 

                London Trip: Mr. Kidd

Be sure to turn in your trip payments.  There are 180 tickets being held but not bought yet.  Passports need to be in by May 4th and Mr. Kidd needs to have a copy of every person's passport.  AWOL travel will send updated invoices the second week of April.  The end of May individual band accounts will be written out to AWOL Travel if requested.  Student band accounts may be used to pay for the band banquet and /or the London trip. 

 

 

Old Business:

Band Banquet: Donna Papa   The Hilton has been reserved for the banquet.  Supplies have been ordered.  Please send in reservations indicating menu choices along with a check by April 23rd.

Mr. McKaig already has a video in production.  Please submit pictures now with a mailing label on the back of each picture.  Last Will and Testaments are due back to Mr. McKaig no later than tomorrow PM.

 

New Business:

                Nominating committee: Joe Sitta

A list of nominations for next year was handed out.  There are several positions open and nominations from the floor were taken.  Please contact Stan Schmidt or Joe Sitta before the meeting next month to add nominations.
